Community Change & Arts + Media Education
Let’s face it. We don’t live in a perfect world. Many of our students personally experience the effects of inequality, injustice, and prejudice. Our film, poetry, music production, theatre, and other media and arts classes amplify their voices. In our programs, students hone their critical thinking and civic engagement. They use media and arts to share both their lived experience as well as how they would change the world to make it a more just and joyful place. Our students are centered in their learning experiences, and we help them access the tools to not only express themselves but to find sustainable education and career opportunities.
Local Community Change
Martha Bowers founded Hook Arts Media, originally Dance Theatre Etcetera, in 1993 in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Her site-specific dance production, “On the Waterfront” featured more than 50 locals. But our community has certainly changed over the years! In the mid-90s, Hook Arts Media joined Red Hook Partners with other local businesses and schools. This coalition focused on urban renewal efforts in the community. Over the years, Hook Arts Media helped open 2 schools and expand arts and media education opportunities in Red Hook. In 2012, when Superstorm Sandy hit our waterfront community, Hook Arts Media joined forces with other local businesses on the Red Hook Coalition. Their urban renewal and recovery efforts resulted in new programming that created jobs, training, and job placement opportunities for local teens and young adults.
