Now Hiring: Teaching Artists

Hook Arts Media is seeking arts and media educators for its work in New York City public schools.

The ideal candidates will have significant experience (3+ years) facilitating arts and/or media education curricula in public school settings. Strong classroom management skills and a strong background in your artform are mandatory. Candidates should be comfortable working with diverse student groups and able to adapt lessons and resources to the interests and needs of students. Hook Arts Media teaching artists are expected to be able to use their artform as a vehicle for critical thinking, civic engagement, and community-building.

The following qualifications are optional, but candidates with these skills are highly encouraged to apply:

Using the artform as a tool in conflict resolution and/or mediation
Significant facilitation experience
Multilingual English/ Spanish fluency
Socioemotional learning, trauma-informed pedagogy, and/or culturally informed pedagogy experience

We are looking for educators in the following subjects:

Dance

We are seeking candidates with experience in a variety of dance styles. Candidates with experience performing and/or teaching Hip Hop, West African, and/or Salsa dance are highly encouraged to apply. Experience teaching the cultural heritage of dance styles and movements is a plus.

Filmmaking

We are seeking candidates who are comfortable teaching students to use professional film equipment including camera, light and sound equipment, and Adobe Premiere to develop short student-produced films.

Music (Drums)

We are seeking candidates who are comfortable teaching students to use a variety of drum types. Candidates should be prepared to lead students to co-create in-school drumline experiences. Experience teaching the cultural heritage of specific drums and rhythms is a plus.

Poetry (Spoken Word)

We are seeking candidates who are comfortable teaching students a variety of poetic forms and structures with emphasis on both writing and performance. Candidates should be prepared to incorporate poetry and poetry games into various modes of learning. Experience teaching the cultural heritage of specific poetry forms, techniques, and movements is a plus.

Theatre

We are seeking candidates with experience in “applied theatre” settings who are prepared to incorporate theatre and theatre games to access various modes of learning. Culturally informed experience teaching various acting techniques, physical theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, and/or playwriting is a plus.

Visual Art

We are seeking candidates with experience in a variety of visual art mediums who are prepared to incorporate visual art exercises and games to support students through the various stages of developing projects. Experience teaching the cultural heritage of various artforms and techniques is a plus.

Pay is commensurate with experience: $60-$70 per hour for emerging teaching artists. $70+ for more experience teaching artists. Teaching artists are compensated for planning hours, special events, performances, and professional developments.
