Hook Arts Media Announces Digital Boot Camp Screening:

30 Brooklyn Teens to Present Social Justice Documentaries

Red Hook, Brooklyn, July 16, 2019: Hook Arts Media uses digital media and arts education to engage young people with their studies, their society, and their futures. To that end, Hook Arts Media provides arts education programs to high-needs schools in addition to filmmaking intensives in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The summer filmmaking program, Digital Boot Camp, pays 30 students minimum wage while they learn how to use professional filmmaking equipment, split into production teams, and self-produce original films. Part of their process involves investigating issues that impact their lives and finding organizations that work to address those issues.

Now running for its 6th summer, the Digital Boot Camp was conceived in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact on Red Hook and other waterfront communities in New York City. At a community summit held in Sandy’s wake, local residents gathered to identify and assess their most pressing needs. One of their chief concerns was the lack of employment opportunities for the area’s teens and young adults. They especially wanted paying opportunities to develop young people’s creative interests through digital media.

Hook Arts Media took the lead in developing a summer Digital Boot Camp that offered 80 hours of instruction in digital filmmaking in collaboration with Good Shepherd Services and Red Hook Initiative and began enrolling students the following summer. Through this program, the three organizations offer employment opportunities, foster creativity, and amplify the voices of emerging storytellers while nurturing their skills as digital natives. Alumni from this program have worked on the sets of Broad City and Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal, earned full college scholarships, and taught youth media programs.

On Monday, August 5, 2019 at 11 am, Hook Arts Media will screen the Digital Boot Camp’s final films at RE:GEN:CY at 22 Commerce Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Hook Arts Media’s advanced filmmakers will also share some original projects in development. Screening attendees will enjoy refreshments and a post-screening discussion with the filmmakers.
